With handicap competitors Ivanovich Gorbatov, Jezki and De Name Escapes Me now officially withdrawn, their owner JP McManus still leads the race for the most successful owner of the festival, the latest Cheltenham odds show. According to him, his team was not happy about how the cross-channel handicapper dealt with these horses in relation to the other geldings from Ireland.
Ivanovich Gorbatov, former Triumph winner, had been among the runners for the County Hurdle, while former Champion Hurdle victor Jezki would have joined the Coral or County Cup. De Name Escapes Me was originally planned to take part in the Coral Cup too. Now they are removed from the races, the ruling Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air will serve as the leader of McManus’ team in the Cheltenham Festival.
Even with three runners out of McManus’ team, he is still expected to triumph over Michael O’Leary, his rival, for the leading owner award at Cheltenham. This was first granted for the past two years, with O’Leary winning both as well as winning seven times in 2018. Nevertheless, compared to O’Leary’s 26 wins, McManus still gets the title of the most successful owner in the history of Cheltenham Festival races, with a total of 54 wins.
With other ante-post favourites like Defi Du Seuil and Champ, McManus still have a 4-7 shot at being the most successful owner in a couple of ante-post lists.
