John constable, born in 1776 and died in 1837, was a famous painter well known for his renditions of the Suffolk country side, this article will give you a small idea of his life and his past. As we said before, Constable was well known for his landscapes, which are mostly of the Suffolk country side and the Dedham vale, which is where he was born and lives the vast majority of his life. John constable was known to have worked on many open air sketches, that were then used as a basis for his far larger exhibition paintings which were painted and worked on from within the confines of his art studio. His art is extremely popular nowadays, but unfortunately, he was not well received during his time outside of France. Born in East Bergholt and primarily self-taught when it comes to his art skills, with his skillset developing slowly over his life time. In 1799 he was a probationer, and in 1800 a student at the Royal Academy schools. He exhibited from 1802 at the Royal Academy in London, and later at the Paris Salon. He influenced the Barbizon School and the French Romantic movement. So as you can see, his experience and skillset evolved over his many years as an artist. Similarly, to other local-ish artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable was primarily influenced by Dutch artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael, with artistic works such as Claude and peter Paul Rubens also proving to be useful colouristic and compositional models. However, the realism of his artistic works was what helped to make his work unique and highly original, it is also what allows for it to still stand up to modern art. In terms of his most famous paintings, those would have to be his rendition of the Dedham vale in 1802 as well as the hay wain of 1821. These are massively popular nowadays, but back during his time he didn’t get much popularity outside France, with him being elected to the royal academy at the age of 52, far after his prime.
