Keeping your household plumbing in top working order can be a challenge when you have pets. Animal hair tends to get into a lot of places and is difficult to remove. And having your toilet or drains blocked can quickly become problematic. See below for our top tips for pet owners for keeping your plumbing system in great shape.
Purchase a drain strainer
Installing a drain strain stops any hair from being able to make its way down the plughole. These are cheap and no installation required. You simply put the drain strainer over the drain as you would for a plug.
Keep the toilet off-limits
We all know that animals like to get in the toilet bowl when they can. This not only causes issues for your plumbing, but it can make your pet ill. By keeping the toilet off limits, their hair will not be able to work its way into the plumbing, thus causing plumbing issues. This also has the added benefit of not making your pet sick from drinking dirty water.
Backyard digging
Backyard digging can soon become a problem. If your pet likes to dig in the yard, they can easily get down to sewerage and water pipes. Once one of these pipes are unearthed, they can get damaged. A damaged pipeline will not let your toilet flush efficiently, causing blockages.
Pressure valves
For the bathing of your furry friends, install pressure valves to the bathroom taps. These regulate the amount of water and the temperature. Ensuring your pet is not scolded or too cold.
Never flush kitty litter
Some kitty litters market as being flushable but most toilets are not designed to be able to flush these items. The result will be clogged plumbing and an expensive plumbing bill. NEVER flush kitty litter down the toilet.
