Every year the American Film Institute honours top 10 films and TV programmes of the year. There are two sets of juries which include academics, critics, and other film professionals, who gather to celebrate and announce the best of American cinema and television. This year the award gave a round of applause to the industry’s favourites: Paul Schrader, Yorgos Lanthimos, Peter Farrelly, Spike Lee, and Rob Marshall as well as the newcomers into the directing status, such as Ryan Coogler, Barry Jenkins, and Bo Burnham, Bradley Cooper, and John Krasinski. Besides the traditional award, this year, there was one additional prize handed to Alfonso Cuaron for Roma due to its foreign-language status. The film creates a picture of Mexico in the 70s and brings the quintessence of comedy and tragedy with a blend of absurdity to the screens. This is an intimate drama of a young servant in the Mexico City who gets pregnant and is not sure at all of what the life has for her. Yet, this simplistic minor version does not render the intricate camera game and details created in this black-and-white masterpiece of 2018. AFI MOVIES OF THE YEAR Black Panther by Ryan Coogler has been named the best-looking Marvel film. The explicit afro-futurism of a self-contained world unfolds to tell the story of T'Challa who returns home to take the place as the KIF you want some references about the film, watch Captain America: Civil War first and then turn to the isolated and technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda in Black Panther. There are dozens of films about the Ku Klux Klan but this one tells a story of a hero. Spike Lee pictured Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department, as the true model for the young. This is a young and brave police officer who aims at revealing the truth about the KKK and so infiltrates in the organization. Together with Flip Zimmerman, the undercover investigation of a lifetime begins. Adolescence has never been a fun period in our lives but Bo Burnham turns this time into a comedy of a lifetime. The story about a thirteen-year-old Kayla tells about the last couple of weeks in the eights grade before she can begin the new life in the high school. This film resembles more a youtube-based documentary than a standard film for the big screens. Yet this is what makes it so authentic and interesting to watch till the very end. The dark comedy of 18th-century that demonstrates the court intrigue is something anyone would laugh and sunk into. The impeccable play of Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone make this film a perfect addition to this year’s AFI awards. Even Gary Collins from Red Rock Entertainment reviews this film as one of the strongest and amazing films of 2018. The story tells about a helpless queen and a strong Lady Sarah who in fact rules the Kingdom while a new servant’s charm endears her to Sarah. The play for the Favourite at the court and the clever jibe are worth watching for everyone this year. The drama of a solitary middle-aged parish pastor is revealed by Paul Schrader. The story of a tormented by alcohol and cancer priest uncovers the dark past of this holy man and his present with a pregnant parishioner and her radical environmentalist husband. The unresting present and despairing future bring this film to the grandiose violence performed by the supposedly almost saint man. This gripping thriller is about an inner crisis of faith a holy man can get through in the tough times of political and planetary unrest. AFI TELEVISION PROGRAMS OF THE YEAR The Americans entered the scene of TV shows back in 2013 and the distinctive feature of this show is that it still remains filled with admiration and confidence that the audience’s expectations will be met in every second of the show and every new season. That’s a story old as the life that received a second chance in the crafty hands of the show writers and Thomas Schlamme as a director. The plot tells the story of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings who are KGB spies living in an arranged marriage and posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C. The story of passionate love, intertwined stories, and the Cold War escalates the curiosity and interest in any viewer. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Even though reviews were mixed up in the beginning and the critics teamed up with the disappointed (for no reason) viewers, the whole second season of the American Crime Story has exceeded all expectations. Yes, producers from Red Rock Entertainment agree that it’s not that obvious and crowd-pleasing as The People vs OJ Simpson, but this is exactly what wins over the film connoisseurs. It’s a delicate psychological story of Gianni Versace’s murder, a tale that sucks you inside and makes an accomplice to everything that happens on the screen. The impeccable play of Édgar Ramírez as Gianni Versace, Darren Criss as Andrew Cunanan (his killer) and Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace creates a unique hookup. Atlanta Yet one more masterpiece from HBO - Barry. The inner tragedy and literal thriller of Barry Berkman (developed and created by Bill Hader) is a sad tale of a depressed low-level hitman who is seeking for a way out. And he does find it in LA. The city brings him a new affection and a novelty of feeling the reason to live. But the past won’t let Barry go that easily and will be hot on his heels at all times. The show has already won several awards so is definitely worth being on your must-watch list. Remember the stunning success of the Breaking Bad? This TV show is a spin-off prequel for the meth lab created by Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman. This story is about their lawyer - Saul Goodman - perfectly embodied by Bob Odenkirk. The funny dark humour and the forbidden world of big guns and money make this show even more appealing than its “father” since now all the fans can get their answers to the questions left by the previous show.
