Bangkok is one of the most captivating travel destinations in the world, and many Thailand first timers are advised to start their travel here before they head for the beaches in Southern Thailand. Bangkok offers something completely different, it’s great value, it’s exciting and it’s thriving with colourful cultures. Brightsun Travel offers cheap flights to the Far East and Thailand, taking you to the heart of Bangkok city. Below is a guide to the ultimate weekend break in Bangkok, with tips on covering the best of Thailand’s capital city in just 48 hours.
Day 1 – Temples, Chinatown & Rooftop Bars
Morning
The first day in Bangkok is best spent exploring the city by boat along the Chao Phraya River. There are a few different express boats as well as a hop on hop off tourist boat which takes visitors on a sightseeing tour of the city – this covers the main attractions such as the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho and Wat Arun.
Afternoon
Take a walk down the narrow lanes of Yaowarat Road - Bangkok’s Chinatown and one of the city’s oldest districts. Here you can get a glimpse into the city’s Chinese culture, browse a range of unique stores and take advantage of an overwhelming selection of mouth-watering Asian cuisines.
Late Afternoon
Visit Wat Saket. This ancient temple is renowned for its 80m tall Golden Mount which has a large Buddha stupa on top. To reach the stupa, you have climb 344 steps which is definitely worth it, as you’ll be treated to amazing 360 views of the city.
Evening
After covering the city’s top tourist attractions, freshen up then head out for some dinner. Why not dine at one of the city’s top-end Thai restaurants? Thara Thong is one of the best rated in the city which boasts a riverside location and hosts traditional performances in the evenings.
A night in Bangkok isn’t complete without getting involved in the city’s immense rooftop bar scene. Some of the best rooftop venues in Bangkok include Above Eleven and Octave Rooftop Lounge Bar which both serve delicious cocktails and offer panoramic views of Bangkok city.
Day 2 – Markets, Massages & Mega Malls
Morning & Afternoon
If you visit Bangkok on a weekend, then we recommend spending the day at Chatuchak Weekend Market. There is such a diverse range of merchandise to purchase here; you could spend hours browsing the thousands of stalls and testing your bartering skills. If you are visiting Bangkok during the week, head to Pratunam Market and the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
Tip: take a break to visit one of Bangkok’s many massage parlours for an indulgent Thai massage. They are amazing and very affordable!
Evening
Those who want the luxury city shopping experience should visit Siam Paragon, a mega mall in the heart of the city selling everything from high street goods to world-renowned luxury brands - it even goes as luxury as sports cars! Other highlights at the mall include a range of gourmet restaurants and cafes, a 16 screen Cineplex and an aquarium.
Bargain hunters should instead visit the MBK centre, which is almost like an indoor street market. It boasts over 2000 stores selling all sorts of affordable goods including fashion items, electronics and souvenirs. This centre also has a local and international food court, and on the top floor is an entertainment complex.
Both of these malls are open from 10:00am until 10pm daily.
