There are different CSCS Cards in UK construction industry to cater to all major trades and construction hierarchy. Whether you are a labourer or a project manager, a beginner or a veteran, a low-skilled worker or a high-skilled tradesman, there is a suitable CSCS Card for all. Here is the list of all CSCS Cards in construction and who each one is meant for:
Yellow CSCS Visitor Card: Meant for: People who just want to visit construction sites. The card doesn’t allow the holder to pick up any construction tool or indulge in any work – physical or mental – on sites How to get: Passing the 45-minute CSCS Test for Operatives is the only requirement for it. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
Green CSCS Labourer Card: Meant for: Labourers, people with no construction related skills, and skilled tradesmen lacking qualifications required for relevant CSCS Cards How to get: You need to take a 1-day Health & Safety Awareness Course and then pass the CSCS Test for Operatives. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it. Note: In case you don’t want to attend the 1-day course, you can opt for Red CSCS Provisional Card. The downside however is that this card is only valid for 6 months and you must have to go for Green Card, and the 1-day course, after that. Take your pick!
Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card: Meant for: People working in trades that require certain level of skills such as: carpenter, plumber, electrician, bricklayer, plasterer, mason, etc. How to get: You must have NVQ level 2 or equivalent qualification in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Operatives. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
Gold CSCS Card (Advanced Craft): Meant for: Highly skilled tradesmen, and skilled tradesmen who have grown in skills and experience How to get: You must have NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Operatives. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
Gold CSCS Card (Supervisor): Meant for: Tradesmen working, or want to work, as supervisor on construction sites How to get: You must have NVQ level 4 or equivalent qualification in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Supervisors. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
Black CSCS Manager Card: Meant for: Tradesmen working, or want to work, as managers on construction sites How to get: You must have at least NVQ level 5 or equivalent qualification in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Managers and Professionals. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
White CSCS Academically Qualified Person Card: Meant for: Individuals who have completed certain construction related degrees, HND’s, HNC’s CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH Diplomas How to get: You need to provide evidence of your qualifications in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Managers and Professionals. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
White CSCS Professionally Qualified Person Card: Meant for: Members of CSCS-approved organizations like ICE, CIOB or the likes How to get: You need to provide evidence of your membership (member card, certificate or official mail) in addition to passing the CSCS Test for Managers and Professionals. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and then you need to renew it.
Red CSCS Trainee Card: Meant for: Individuals pursuing a construction related qualification that leads to a skilled CSCS Card. The card allows them access to site and thus some hands-on training. How to get: You only need to pass the CSCS Test for Operatives for this card. Validity: It’s valid for 5 years and non-renewable.
Red CSCS Apprentice Card: Meant for: Individuals pursuing a recognized apprenticeship framework How to get: First you need to provide evidence that you are registered for apprenticeship. Passing the CSCS Test for Operatives is the final requirement to get this card. Validity: It’s valid for 4 years and you can’t renew it.
