Chinese Pianist Sensation Stirs Online Controversy |
Posted: February 24, 2017 |
Sunny Li is a supremely talented young pianist hailing from China who has come to the UK to forge her career as a professional musician. However, videos of her performing her 'piano workout', which were shared by Classic FM on their social media pages, stirred up quite the internet storm as a result of the position in which Sunny had to sit in order to play two grand pianos simultaneously. The two videos accumulated over 1 million views together with a whole host of comments as well. Many of these comments were complimentary, commending Sunny for the quality of her playing, but others were rather derogatory, making arguably sexist comments on the way Sunny was sitting. Sunny was undoubtedly hurt and somewhat confused by the comments since the videos were only intended to be a bit of fun, but her experience certainly highlights the prejudices of gender than still remain the classical music world. Despite this, Sunny is not one to wallow and has made her own comment that 'There is no reason why women can’t play like men, they are just as equal. It’s the modern day – sometimes women are even better than the men!’ On top of this, along with the release of her new album, Sunny Li Piano, the young pianist is hoping to get more young people into classical music - she feels that if they gave it a chance, they would be able to realise the the powerful emotional capabilities of the genre which she argues cannot be found in popular music with its lack of substance. To promote her new album, Sunny is going out on the road for a UK tour, taking her talents to a wider audience.
