Are Save the Dates Always Necessary for Weddings? |

Wedding etiquette can be tricky to navigate. Whilst I’m not a fan of cookie-cutter weddings, knowing what is expected for things like your wedding stationery can make wedding planning a little easier. One of the questions I get asked a lot is, are Save the Dates always necessary? Save the Date etiquette can be confusing, so here’s my take: Are Save the Date Cards Always Necessary for Weddings?Save the Dates are a relatively new tradition – especially in the UK & Ireland where I’m based. Here they’re viewed as a relatively American concept, but they have been embraced pretty wholeheartedly. It is easy to question why Save the Dates are needed – it could be viewed as just another expense to factor into your budget. But Save the Dates can be really useful for weddings where you’re asking your guests to travel. That way they can have as much advance notice as possible to book their travel and accommodation (and save up if you’re getting married somewhere very far flung!). Plus, if you’re stipulating that your wedding is to be child-free, sending a Save the Date with plenty of notice will allow parents to find a willing babysitter. What about situations where you can skip them? I’d say don’t worry about sending Save the Dates if you’re getting married locally and most people know about your engagement and can guess that they’ll be getting an invite. Do you have to spend a ton of money on Save the Dates?Assuming you’ve decided that Save the Dates are a must for your wedding, you definitely don’t have to spend a fortune on them. In fact, you can opt for a completely free Save the Date option if you send them by email, or use an online e-invitation provider. ***** My motto for wedding planning is to do things YOUR way. Just because Save the Dates are a pretty common tradition these days, it doesn’t mean that you need to send them for your wedding. As with all things wedding, do whatever feels right for you.
