Designer Fashion Through the Decades |
Posted: June 26, 2018 |
There is a huge choice of designer labels today, and online designer clothing stores have made designer clothes a lot more accessible. From Maison Margiela, Mallet and Michael Kors to Polo Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, and Ted Baker, the list goes on and on. But how much do fashion designers influence trends. Or do the trends influence the designers. Here’s a look back at the fashion trends through the decades and a bit of an insight to what influenced them.
Sixties The sixties were the decade that the youth found their voice. From mods, miniskirts and go-go boots, to the tie-dyed shirts of the hippies. The sixties youth generation was driving the fashion trends and designers like Barbara Hulanicki, Paco Rabanne and Guy Laroche followed. The sixties also saw the space race culminate with the first men on the moon. That led to designers to create the space-age look of white and silver trouser suits and the use of very modern looking fabrics.
Seventies The seventies were heavily influenced by disco. As the decade progressed the heels turned into platform shoes and the trousers got wider. Glam rock bought glitter and lurex to the scene, and clothes got very colourful. Towards the end of the seventies, punk rock hit the streets and Vivienne Westwood made a name for herself with her outlandish bondage outfits and confrontational t-shirts. The Seventies were the decade that fashion rules ceased to exist
Eighties The eighties were dominated by the fitness craze. Aerobics, dance-movies, and fitness videos created a trend or leggings, leotards and leg warmers. At work, the men wore double breasted suits by Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent. The number of designer brands then may not have been as large as you would see today at online designer clothing store like Choice, but the label on your clothes was becoming more and more important.
Nineties The nineties saw fashion toned down to a minimalist level again. The popular shades on the runways were white, grey and black. Grunge took hold and then Mark Jacobs showcased his groundbreaking S/S 93 collection that was heavily influenced by grunge style. Hip-hop moved firmly into the mainstream. Designers soon followed the trend that had been fuelled by the appearances of artistes like Salt-N-Pepa and Aaliyah on MTV.
The Two-Thousands In the 2000s, fast fashion became the word of the decade. The emergence of online designer fashion stores like choicestore.com gave everyone instant access to off-the-peg designer fashion. Designers of note in 2000s included Vera Wang, Christian Louboutin and Jean-Paul Gaultier. While Britney Spears and Paris Hilton made the tracksuits popular again, there were also vintage and ethnic influences creeping into fashion as well.
The Twenty-Tens We still have a few years left yet of the 2010s, so there will be more to come yet. Streetwear brands have certainly made their mark in the current decade, as have hipster fashion and athletic wear. The popular fashion brands of the 2010s so far have included Christian Dior, Abercrombie and Fitch and Ben Sherman. Other front runners include DSquared2, Billionaire Boys Club and Stone Island. There is so much choice these days in designer fashion, it’s hard to predict which brand will be the eventual ultimate fashion winner in the twenty-tens.
